Action Man was based on his American Cousin Gi Joe which was released in the USA by Hasbro in 1964. The licence to produce the UK variation was awarded to Palitoy in 1966, with other countries being granted licenses including Spain with Gyperman and Brazil with Falcon.

But it didn’t take long for the competition to jump onto the 12″ action soldier bandwagon with companies like Mego, PGD and Zodiac producing their own versions of this top selling toy.

Lanard Toys produced some decent figures in their earlier Ultra Corps range but like so many other companies they moved onto the less articulated figures with moulded uniforms and weapons before producing the 3.5″ figure range that we see today.

The Peterkins World Peacekeepers range used to be half decent, but the kit on some of the newer figures are a lesser quality production, which is a shame as the body is fully articulated and poses well.

Nowadays we see 12″ Action Figures on all the shop shelves and while most are just cheap toys with oversized weapons and second rate accessories some are absolutely stunning with sculpted heads, finely detailed uniforms and precision made weapons and accessories.

Some of these figures have limited production runs and cost hundreds of pounds and are very much sought after by collectors. Even Hot Toys, DiD and BBi figures have shot up in price especially for the earlier releases which have long been discontinued.
