On the 5th of May 1980 “Operation Nimrod” was launched by a select team of SAS soldiers to bring to an end the six-day siege after gunmen took 26 people hostage in the Iranian embassy building in London. After the gunmen killed one of the hostages the special forces team moved in and rescued the remaining 19 hostages and neutralised five of the six hostage-takers in only 17 minutes making it one of the most successful anti-terrorist operations carried out on British soil.
To mark the occasion Palitoy launched its own range of SAS figures starting with the SAS outfit in the “Experts” range followed by the SAS Commander, SAS Beachhead attack, SAS Underwater Attack, SAS Airstrike, SAS Parachute Attack and the SAS Secret Mission pack.
The SAS Key Figure and SAS Parachute Attack were later re-released as part of the Modellers Loft 40th Anniversary collection.
